What is a neuropsychologist?
A neuropsychologist is a licensed, clinical psychologist who has had extensive training in the area of brain-behavior relationships. Although a neuropsychologist has a doctoral degree in psychology, he or she does not solely focus on emotional or psychological problems. The neuropsychologist has additional training in the specialty field of clinical neuropsychology, including the study of brain anatomy, the effects of various diseases on brain function, and the use of specialized tests in diagnostic evaluation.
What does a typical evaluation involve?
The Neuropsychology Clinic offers brief and comprehensive assessments for both adults and children. A typical evaluation provided by our clinic involves a half or full day of testing, clinical interview with our licensed clinical neuropsychologist, and review of available medical and/or academic records. Subsequently, patients (and legal guardians/caretakers) attend a feedback session where results of the tests are given, recommendations are made, questions are answered, and appropriate referrals are made. Full written reports can also be provided.
What can a neuropsychological evaluation tell me?
This battery of tests provides a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's brain-behavior function in order to determine problems in neurocognitive function associated with various brain disorders. This evaluation helps specify a patient's cognitive strengths and weaknesses related to neurological dysfunction, determine differential contributions of neurologic and psychiatric factors in a patient's presenting problems, and contribute to decisions regarding current and future independent function.
Who can benefit from a neuropsychological assessment?
Neuropsychological assessment is a systematic clinical diagnostic procedure used to determine the extent of any possible behavioral deficits following diagnosed or suspected brain injury. Such assessments would be helpful for patients having, or suspected of having, various brain disorders that result in problems with memory, intellectual and cognitive functioning, daily activities, or behavior and emotions. Such conditions include head injury, stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor, toxic or other encephalopathies, dementia, developmental and learning disabilities, and other neurological disorders. Neuropsychological assessment is helpful in determining the differential contribution of neurologic and psychiatric factors in a patient's presenting problems, and in the specification of the patient's psychological and behavioral strengths and weaknesses related to neurological dysfunction.
Will my insurance cover a neuropsychological assessment?
In most cases, health insurance will cover a neurocognitive or psychological assessment. However, we do not accept any insurance. We are a private pay clinic only. Payment is required in full at the time of service unless otherwise agreed upon with a contracting company.
